Friday Fav!

Good morning lovers. Happy Friday! Let’s get right into my favorite look this week. In my mind, this girl never disappoints… how do you feel about her? Let’s take a look…

Charlize Theron, ladies and gents! How gorgeous does she look here? I really love this look because I feel like there is kind of some irony behind it. She’s out and about promoting her new movie Promethus, which I gather from previews is about a bunch of people who get lost in space while encountering aliens. So what I like about this look, is that her dress kind of reminds me of, like, a galaxy? Ya know? I don’t know if she went for that look on purpose, but regardless, I dig it. The color of the dress is gorgeous and I loooove the way she looks so simple and elegant with her hair and makeup all understated like it is. I am quite saddened that whoever took this picture cut off her shoes! Any good photographer knows to get a good picture you must have show the whole body from head to toe, duh. So I went ahead and tracked down some other pictures… I HAD to know what her shoes looked like! hah

They don’t make or break the look for me. And in the middle picture she is having a very Angelina Jolie moment with the leg… gag me, but I still love it none the less. What do you guys think? Is her look a hit or a cosmic miss this week? (see what I did there?) Later loves!

Keep your nails in the shade

I have been really back and forth lately with the colors I choose to put on my nails. There is one thing I have noticed, my toes are all bright, bright, bright, while my fingers are a little bit more… subdued. Well, I don’t know if subdued is the right word for it, but they’re not hot pink. I wanted to share with you guys a couple of my favorite shades right now. Take a peek.

Now, the purple and the green are basically flat out primary colors. I have the green on my nails right now and while I’m kind of digging it, I don’t know how long it’ll last being that it is THIS green. See….

Like… green green. The whole point of buying the purple and the green hues were because I am kind of attracted to all things Fall right now. I think it may have something to do with the baby and my hormones, because I really have no other way to explain it, hah. I want to wear sweaters and boots right now and paint my nails Linkin Park at Midnight… I’m all about Fall right now even though summer has just kicked off. So these two shades have been my happy medium. I don’t have a picture of what the purple looked like on, but I can say that I did love it! The greatest thing about these two colors from Revlon is that they last a super long time without chipping. I had the purple on for over a week and it just looked worn as it was growing out with my nails but not one nail started to chip. So I highly suggest this brand. The green is 571 – Posh and the purple is 240 – Impulsive. I just love the names too! hah These two colors were actually on sale at the drug store for about $5.

My next love, which I am surprised I didn’t talk about first, is my coveted blue shade from NARS.

Sorry kids, had to take the picture off of my instagram.. I thought I had another one saved but it doesn’t appear to be so. (Speaking of… follow me on Instagram! TheRachelRoss of course) SO! I originally saw this color on Pinterest, of all places, and I was like I HAVE TO HAVE IT! And it took exactly one week for me to go out and find it. The color is called Kutki and it is part of a very fabulous limited edition collection of colors. Doesn’t the phrase “limited edition” give you anxiety? It’s like why can’t you just put a time limit on it? It really gets the job done of freaking me out and making me believe I have to buy something right then and there or else it could be gone forever. Actually… I did end up snagging the last of these from Lord & Taylor so I guess the whole Limited Edition and limited time offer thing is pretty legit. ANYWAY! For me, this is the perfect shade of blue for the summer! Essie’s Turquoise and Caicos is all the rage every summer, but if you want something a little more true blue, this is the shade. It was $18 at Lord & Taylor department stores, and totally worth every penny. It kept its bright shine and didn’t chip for the week and a half I kept it on. Perfection.

The last color is I Need a Refresh-Mint by Wet-n-Wild. I really liked this color because it’s kind of a combination of the blue and the green I’m so into right now. Sadly, I don’t have a picture of this one either, but take my word for it, it’s a lovely color!

So that’s it kids! A couple of my favorite nail polishes right now. I spotted Essie’s new resort collection in the store yesterday but somehow contained myself from buying every single one of them, don’t ask me how! That is so unlike me! haha. I am crushing on Mojito Madness and Off the Shoulder, so I may have to make some new purchases and do another little review for ya soon. Well, it’s beautiful out and my pool is waiting for me. So until tomorrow, have a lovely day! Kisses.

Friday Fav!

Good afternoon kids! I hope you are all having a wonderful Friday, wherever you are. It’s beautiful here on the east coast today, thank god! It’s seriously about time. I just went and had a nice little lunch with the hubs on the water at one of our favorite spots. But now it’s time to fill you all in on my fav look this week. Check it out.

This week’s fav: Gwyneth Paltrow

Look at her, looking gorgeous as ever at the Met Gala! To me, she is someone who is aging perfectly! I know that’s like a weird thing to say about someone… but she just looks so good to me! Let’s take a look at her whole get up.

She looks gorgeous in this little Prada mini, showing juuuuust the right amount of side boob. Any more and we’d have a Janet Jackson Super Bowl fiasco on our hands. She plays by the fashion rules… short skirt, high neck. Even if you can see half her boob.

I love the color of the dress and the subtle makeup and hair. And don’t even get me started on these shoes! I need them. For reals. I am totally obsessed with her look. To me, she nailed it. What do you guys think?

The Upside Down French Braid

This is my take on this hair style. Usually you can find the upside-down french braid accompanied by a high, top-knotish looking bun. That doesn’t really work so well for me.  First off, top knots never really look as glamourous on me as I want them to, ya know? Secondly, being that I am now 8 months pregnant, there’s some extra weight in my face that I feel like could be seen from the moon now and top-knot buns only seem to accentuate that. Wonderful. When I was in high school I always had a tendency to make this stupid face when anyone took a picture of me and it always looked like I had a double chin. He showed up so often, in fact, that my dear friend Jed thought it appropriate to name him Chester Cottompot. When someone would tag me in a picture on Facebook, Chester would get a tag as well. I lost him for a while, but he’s back now. Oh how I’ve missed you, Chester, really. So I modified this hair style a little bit to be more…. me (and flattering). This is how it’s usually found:

Gorgeous… elegant… beautiful. And unfortunately, not my cup of tea. This is my “elegant” upside-down french braid look.

I also noticed that my french braids do the opposite of normal french braids and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it stop doing that! Mine are like, inside out, they don’t lay flat against my head. Even when I do my own regular french braids this is how they come out. I know it has something to do with the way I hold the hair and the direction I weave it in, but I can’t change it. So my upside-down french braid is all kinds of different from everyone else’s, haha.

So this is how I do it, folks. I do an inside out french braid (purposely or not, who knows?), I braid the hair all the way to the end, then I use it to hold up my wavy, messy pony tail. And there ya have it. I’m going to keep playing around with this and see if I can figure out how to do the inverted braid, but for now this is my ish. What do you guys think? Have you tried this hair style yet? Would you try it with a sleek top knot or a messy pony tail like mine? I like the bun, and someday when I have something fancy to go to I may just attempt it. For now, I like the ponytail because I think it makes this hairstyle wearable for just, hanging out and going out. Keepin it fun without making it too fancy.

aaaaand this is just me being silly, HI. =p Til tomorrow, lovers! Have a wonderful day. Kisses.

How To: The Four (4) Strand Braid

Hola amigos & good mornin! I have a little tutorial for you lovelies today. It is how to do the newly popular four strand braid on yourself! I explain in the video that at first it can be really challenging, especially if you’re good at braiding hair, hah. And I say especially if you’re GOOD at braiding hair because your fingers are probably so used to the normal 3 strand braid that it can be a little confusing for them at first. If you can’t get the hang of it right away, don’t get discouraged! It took me many, many tries before I knew what I was doing. So here it is!

Hope you guys liked it! Let me know if you have any questions or comments. As always, I love hearing from you guys. :] Have a great afternoon & I’ll see ya later for some Tunesday beatzzzz. Kisses.

My Secret to the Next Day Blowout

If you have hair like mine, blowouts can be kind of bittersweet. You love blowing out your hair because let’s face it, when it’s in its natural state it can be kind of cray, but the next day your hair just never, ever looks as good. It’s a total bummer. BUT my dear sweet friends, I have a solution for you. I have the curliest of curly hair. Please note something that I swore I would never share with the public… a picture one of my best friends took of me while camping in the jungles of Costa Rica. We literally lived in a tree house for a week. It was amazing, if you can get used to the Howler Monkeys waking you up at 4 in the morning like they’re about to storm into the place and eat you alive. Other than that, and the bugs (of course), it’s a lot of fun, ha. So anyway, as you can imagine, life in the jungle isn’t exactly the equivalent to a spa treatment for my hair.

Observe: This lovely picture, taken in January of 2009, haunts my life. THIS is what my hair looks like in its natural habitat, the jungle. That’s where I belong with this mane. Ok it’s not REALLY this bad, this was after some brushing but when people say “oh just let your hair air dry and then style it” this is what I would have to walk around with first. And that, my friends, will never, ever, happen. EVER. There was even a phase like a year ago where “frizz was in” and I was like YES this is my chance! But even then I was like no, this looks insane. Literally.

SO anyway! As you can guess, all the hair gel in the world can’t really contain my locks so I never wear it curly anymore. Blow dryers and straighteners are typically part of my daily routine. But there is nothing more frustrating than going through all the effort of blow drying your hair only to wake up with it all matted to your head with sweat looking like a hot mess. It really sogs my bread, ya know? SO! Over the years I have come up with the best solution. Take a look at this short video to learn all the secrets about how to preserve your blowout for as long as possible! Enjoy!

So that’s it folks! All you need is a 2 inch curling iron and you can make your blowout last for days. Here are a couple pictures I took about 20 minutes after filming the video so you have a better idea of what your hair will look like.

See! The curls have fallen out and you are left with beautiful waves. You look like you just walked out of the hair salon. A couple other tips I wanted to add that I didn’t mention in the video were how to wear your hair when you sleep. After I give myself a blowout I always sleep with my hair in a loose top knot on top of my head. That way your hairs not all over the place getting all hot and sweaty and sticking to your neck throughout the night. Keeps you cool and keeps your hair in a wave-like formation for the next morning. Another plus of using the 2″ curling iron for touch ups? The heat from the barrel acts as almost a flat iron when you use it. It’s big enough and hot enough to smooth your hair, but not small enough to straighten it like a flat iron will. You can use this trick for as long as your hair will allow. Since my hair is thicker it doesn’t need to be washed that often. If you have thinner hair you might have to wash your hair every day or every other day.

So let’s recap shall we? Blow dry your hair. Wear it and love it all day and night. When it’s time for bed wrap it up in a nice, loose top knot. The next day, “curl” it with a 2″ curling iron, nothing smaller! And there ya have it. That should preserve your blowout for as long as you want it to. Try it out! Let me know how it works for you. :]

ALSO! Don’t forget Linea Pelle is having their super amazing sample sale today & tomorrow. So if you’re in the LA area you should definitely stop by and snag some goodies. (I may or may not have already done so this morning). Best way to start the day! Enjoy. xo

April Faves!

Good morning kids, Happy May!! Can you believe it’s May already? I feel like April just stopped by to say hi and left. May is probably going to fly by as well as I have a ton of things lined up this month. Pretty much everyone I know has a birthday this month… I have family parties, I should be visiting school this weekend to support my Sorority and see some sisters I haven’t seen in forever, I should be having a baby shower (cough, cough), and Bamboozle! At which I hope to meet the one and only Dave Grohl. My old boss has come through with All Access passes to this wondrous event and I plan on stalking Dave the entire time, haha. Not seriously, but I am most excited for that! I can never pass up an opportunity to see the Foo Fighters, even if I will be over 8 months pregnant. Whateva, ya know?

Anywho! April is already gone, which is crazy to me, but which also means it’s time for April Favorites! Let’s get to it. I have a few oh-so-random items to talk about this time hah.

Bling! I picked up these two awesome bracelets from a little boutique in Little Silver, NJ called Uphoria Boutique. They have ALL of the cutest stuff and I cannot wait til I lose this baby bump + baby weight, I will be shopping there all the time. In the meantime, I stick to the jewelry because at least that I can still wear, hah. This little shop has the best jewelry, too. Neon watches that are totally in right now, big bangles, wrap around bracelets, everything. I literally went back and forth between these bracelets and a few others for about 15 minutes. It was torture, but eventually I ended up going with these two. “LOVE” jewelry is very in right now and I am a sucker for anything with skulls on them. I liked these two as well because the turquoise bracelet will look beautiful with a coral manicure and some bright jewelry for summer, and the white marble skull bracelet literally goes with anything. Right now I’m wearing them together and they look awesome.

COLOR! I have had most of these YSL eyeshadow pallets since Fashion Night Out last year but I hardly ever play around with them anymore. Recently I’ve been using them more and more mixing and matching colors from each one. I used to be a big lover of eyeshadow, every other day I’d have some other wacky combination of colors adorning my eyelids. Somewhere along the line I kind of grew up too much and started taking myself too seriously. I got way too into the whole “we must look like grown ups and everything must match” thing that was going on for a while. Now, I say fack it. Play with color, have fun. I have a collection of eyeshadows so big I could open up my own beauty supply store and I was using the same “Natural Eye pallet” every day. That should seriously be considered a crime. These bad boys look bold but are subtle enough to play with color without going overboard. They’re obviously a little on the expensive side, but look how pretty they are!

Self tanning Lotion! As we all know by now, since I got pregnant I have clearly given up tanning. (As everyone should, it’s so bad for you and there are a million alternatives out there!!!) Sorry, I don’t usually force my opinion on people but tanning and smoking are two things I will just never understand why people do them. ANYWAY. SO as you might all remember, since I gave up tanning I have been looking for the perfect at home spray tan which has been an epic battle to say the least. I have finally given up on that search as I am pretty sure that product does not exist, at least not within my budget. But one thing that has never done me wrong? Jergens Natural Glow tanning lotion. This stuff is a gift from the Heavens. It provides just the right amount of color, it’s not streaky, it doesn’t clump up at your elbows and knees, it doesn’t smell so bad you need a gas mask to apply it… it’s just phenomenal. I have been using this for the past month or two and although I’m not super tan anymore, it still keeps me looking like I have a healthy glow, and that my friends, is the point. We’ve been lucky enough to have SOME nice weather here in NJ so I’ve been able to lay out a few days here and there and seal in the color with this lotion. I love it! I definitely recommend it!

Soap….. This is probably one of the more random items on my list, but I just feel the need to express my love for Dove products, especially their soaps, haha. I HATE using a bar of soap that leaves my skin feeling almost sticky? Like seriously, how does that make anyone feel clean? The only soap I’ve ever used that never made my skin feel like that is by Dove. They have perfected the art of the good soap. And these go fresh items they carry? Superb! They smell amazing and seriously get the job done of waking me up in the morning. I love these things.

Nails! Ok, but now it is really no secret that I am beyond obsessed with this shade of nail polish by Essie. It is called “Fiesta” and I feel like my hands are having a fiesta every time I put this shade on. It’s a bold pink, but not over the top girly and like, “ew that’s so pink,” pink. You know what I mean? Every time I paint my nails I find myself having an internal fight with my subconscious not to pick out this color for the 100th time in a row. Much like my eyeshadow collection, I have a vast nail polish collection as well so I try to use as much color as I can but this shade makes it so hard! It literally looks perfect on. If you haven’t done so already, go to the store and grab this shade. I think it’s the perfect pink for people who really aren’t THAT into pink, like myself.

LIPS! I have this really weird obsession with lipstick… I am not really a lipstick person. I’m more of a put on a coat of chapstick and then top it with lip gloss kind of person. However, every time I go to the store I find myself pouring over the lipsticks like all of the sudden I’m going to be into them. I trick myself into believing it and I usually buy one or two shades that I’ll never wear.

HOWEVER! I have found about 4 shades that I do wear, not all the time, but out of the 100 I own, if I’m in the mood for lipstick I can grab one of four shades and feel satisfied. These two are the perfect shades for Spring. Both by Revlon, they don’t make me feel like a circus clown when I have them on. I am always looking for a pretty peach color that almost looks like you’re not even wearing lipstick, but that maybe you just bit your lip? Peach Parfait, that shade! Well done Revlon. It’s almost a little rosy colored which adds a little color to your lips natural hue. The second color is, for me, the perfect shade of pink. I bought this when the whole neon pink lip trend was in, and it is in no way a neon pink, hah. Which… Thank god! I would have looked ridiculous as I never ever wear lipstick and my first attempt would have been with a neon pink? Who am I? In any event, this pink is soft but still punchy. Not too babydoll-ish but pink enough to stand out. Gorg for Spring!

Last but not least…. SMELL! One of my best friends bought this body spray from Victoria’s Secret for me 2 years ago as a bachelorette party gift. I got married at the end of the summer and she said “wear this on your honeymoon and then every time you use it after that it will always remind you of that time in your life.” And my god was she right! I try not to use it that often because I don’t want the smell and memory to go away, haha. But it’s called Island Escape and it’s a mix of “Beachy Coconut” and Sugarcane. It smells like pure amazingness. I only use it on the brightest and sunniest and warmest days as I always want to feel like I am back in Hawaii on my honeymoon whenever I wear it. Victoria’s Secret has the best of everything don’t they? Underwear…body sprays… they’re really just perfect at everything they do. If Victoria’s Secret were a woman she’d be that bitch everyone hated in High School because she was beautiful and never sucked at anything… even her grades were perfect. I hate her just thinking about her. Anyway… like I said we had some really amazing weather this past month so I’ve been wearing it a little more here and there and it’s only getting me more ready for Summer. If you need a new scent for summer I suggest snooping around the Victoria’s Secret body sprays, you are sure to find one you like that won’t break your bank!

So those are my favorites for April kids! Now I have to ponder what song I am going to post later. It’s a dreary rainy day here on the East Coast so it’ll probably be something really calming that will make everyone want to go home, put on their pajamas, and cuddle up. Or maybe it won’t…. who knows? Until later… ;] xo

How To: Face Framing French Braid

Hello lovelies and good morning! About a month ago one of my wonderful readers asked that I post a tutorial on how to do the face framing french braid, A la Jennifer Aniston.

Spring Fever Manicure

Have you seen the episode of How I Met Your Mother when they all agree to not watch the Super Bowl until they can sit down and watch the recording together? And Ted goes out into the world wearing those ridiculous blinder goggles so he can’t see anything pertaining to the game? Yeah…. I need a pair of those goggles when I go out to drug stores.

I stop at CVS for cotton squares and I leave with my hands full of crap I don’t really need. Case and point: my latest love bird manicure. So remember my anti-Spring manicure that I was ranting and raving about? That lasted all about 2 days… maybe less. While I am still madly in love with my camo-green hue known as Armed and Ready by Essie, something else caught my eye this weekend and I couldn’t wait to get home and try it.

I am such a big fan of Sally Hansen’s nail decals. They’re easy, affordable, and adorable. I actually haven’t used them in a while as I’ve been religiously painting and re-painting my nails every other day, but I found a decal I could just not refuse. So Springy and so cute! Check it out.

Look at the little love birds! They’re just soo cute, I can’t even! NOW! Most of the time when I use these decals, I do the exact opposite of what I did up here. I usually paint all my nails except for the ring finger and apply the decals only to those fingers. But these were so cute to me I opted for the reverse. Then I couldn’t decide wether I wanted to use blue or pink on my ring fingers… so I did both. :]

You will notice the pink on my right hand is my coveted color, Fiesta by Essie. The blue on my left hand is the color I keep talking about using! Blue Away by Sally Hansen. So seriously, doesn’t it look like spring kind of threw up all over my hands? Yeah, I know. This will probably last me until Monday (if that). We all know I have serious ADD when it comes to my nails.

So what do you think? Too much or too cute? I hope you like them!

Armed and Ready

Well I’ve done it again. I walk into a drug store for chap stick and I walk out with my hands full of new nail polish shades. I think I need nail polish rehab, for reals. But really, how can you honestly contain yourself when you walk past the beautifully colorful walls? It’s no easy task, especially when brands like Essie release their new resort collection, I’m a goner.

If you’re like me, which I don’t know how many of you sane individuals are, I typically pick out my shades by their names. Whenever I go to get my nails done in a salon I always feel rushed by the employees to pick out a color. It’s not that simple! But I usually crack under the pressure and grab the closest bottle to my hands and end up sad and angry with my decision. I try to take my time, but usually the deciding factor for me, is the name. If there are two almost identical colors, I pick the one with the cooler name. Is that weird? Well this past week while perusing the new Essie collection it happened again. I just finished reading the Hunger Games series so this particular shade stood out to me right away, based on its name. ;] It’s dark for spring, but I’m kind of digging it.

This is Armed and Ready by Essie. It’s kind of sexy. You can’t really tell from the pictures, but it has this slight tinge of copper shine to it.

See? I happened to be wearing a kaki color maxi dress today and opted for an army green makeup scheme and this color nail polish fits perfectly with the whole look. I’m kinda diggin’ it.

But wait, let’s get back to the Hunger Games… have you read it? I finished the entire trilogy in about 4 days, total. After finishing the third book I slipped into a little mild depression. I’m sad it’s over. I was so engrossed in the series I think I might have to go back and re-read the entire thing because no book I’ve attempted to read since has satisfied me.

Anyway, that’s my little random side note for the day. If you need a nice little change up from the typical bright and cheery colors of spring I highly suggest this one. It would also match a brown leather belt perfectly too. And guess what? You can win one! (shameless plug for my giveaway, thought it segued perfectly)… If you haven’t done so already, put your name in to win a gorgeous vintage leather belt from my favorite designer, Linea Pelle. Sign up here! You have til Tuesday. And as Effie would say, may the odds be ever in your favor! ;]
