Saturday Night Fever

Today’s manicure is brought to you by; boredom and pinterest. I saw a manicure kind of resembling this one while spending a billion hours on this website. It wasn’t exactly like this one, but feast your eyes on this mani and then I’ll get to the explanations.

I am loving this disco ball inspired manicure. The one I saw on pinterest was similar with the white backdrop but the sparkles this person used were silver and gold and they layered them. The only sparkles I had were the pink ones, and rather than going out and spending an arm and a leg on new glitter polish that who knows when I’ll use it again, I opted to change the manicure based on what I already own.

So here’s what you need:

Pure white polish, not a french manicure white. You want this white to be solid. Sparkle polish with big sparkles, not little glitter. I used Wet n’ Wild – Wild Shine in white and Essie – A Cut Above.

Steps:

1. Paint your nails with two coats of a base color and let dry completely.

2. Use the glitter polish and paint a diagonal line across your nail.

3. Let dry completely.

4. Paint a second coat with the glitter polish across your nails.

And when you’re done, voila!

A very Saturday Night Fever/New Year’s Eve-esque mani to rock and keep you entertained on this boring and dreary Friday afternoon. So try it out and let me know what you think!

Speaking of Pinterest, who is on this fantastic and amazing site? Because I am and it’s totally and completely addicting. Find me here and follow me! I’m always looking for new inspiration. See ya soon. ;]

Nail A.D.D

Ok, so my addiction to nail polish and ability to give myself manicures I truly hate has made it impossible to only post a manicure once a month. So here we go. This manicure is so, so easy! As long as you have a steady hand, there is no reason you can’t do this free hand. Take a gander.

What you need:
For this particular manicure I chose to use a base and a glitter top coat that were similar in hue.  I think it would look pretty cute with seriously contrasting colors and that may very well be my next mani. Until I get some other bright idea and try something else. I used Power Clutch by Essie and My Private Jet by OPI.

Here are the easy steps you need to follow:

Step 1: Paint your nails with the base color.

Step 2: Let dry completely.

Step 3: Apply a second coat of the base color.

Step 4: Let dry completely, again.

Step 5: With a very steady hand, paint a straight line up half the nail. Starting at the bottom of the nail and going towards the tip is the easiest.

Here’s another view.

I like the subtle look of this manicure. You almost have to look twice before you even realize it’s not just the standard mani. Try this yourself with your own combination of colors and let me know how it works out!

Tunesday Spotlight: Cowboy Junkies

So I actually heard this song for the first time while I was flipping through the channels and landed on one of HBO’s random movie channels. This movie Lost and Delirious was playing. I had never seen it before, never even heard of it before. But after Coyote Ugly I have a deep love for Piper Perabo and she just so happened to be the first thing I saw so I thought I’d stop and take a gander for a minute. The movie itself, much like the title, is just weird. And this actually happens to be like, the only scene I watched. What really captivated me was this song playing throughout the entire scene. The voice is beautiful and the lyrics remind me of some fantasy life I would love to live. This is the exact clip I watched, so you’ll see what I saw for the first time. Unless, of course, you’ve already seen this movie before. These are my favorite lyrics from the song:
All that I know to be true is the touch of your hand on my skin.
One look from you can so easily soothe all this turmoil within.
As we dance cheek to cheek with our feet so completely locked in a time all our own,
I stark to speak, and you gently keep me moving in time to the song.
And in a voice that is sloppy with gin, you say, “let the world spin.”

Enjoy!

Manicure of the Month!

This month’s manicure is dedicated to my football team, the New York Giants! I am a big believer in jinxes and good/bad luck charms. I don’t carry around a rabbit’s foot, I’m not that crazy, but I do believe that some things could have good vibes attached to them, and others could have bad vibes. I have lucky t-shirts that I rely on. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m sure the Giants haven’t made it this far because I refuse to take off my lucky t-shirt when they play… but, I do believe it helps! (haha, crazy, I know!) I am a creature of habit and when I find something that works for me, I hate to switch it up. But yesterday as my best friend Ashley and I were wandering the mean aisles of Target, we came across this bright idea… Giants themed nails! This was a big step for me, I didn’t want to go too over the top before the game. I believe getting too amped up puts too much pressure on everyone, including the team, haha! So here they are. Our NY Giants inspired nails. Peep this.

We decided to try out the crackle nail polish. A first for both of us. So we went for the Aruba Blue by Essie and opted for the Sally Hansen brand Crackle polish. Be warned: it goes on thick! I really didn’t love the way mine came out so I’ll show you Ashley’s manicure step-by-step instead. (there’s only two steps… it’s pretty fool proof).

What You Need:

Two colors of your choice: one will be the base, and the other the top coat.

Steps:

1. Paint your nails with the base coat. We used Aruba Blue and it’s dark and thick enough that you only really need one coat. If you’re using a lighter or more sheer color you can probably get away with two coats

2. Wait for the base coat to dry completely.

3. When nails are dry, add a very thin layer of the crackle. I caked mine on a little too thick and I didn’t love the way it came out. Ashley’s, and my little sister Abby’s, came out much better than mine! hah

And viola! The finished product!

So our NY Giants nails proved to be good luck, they were able to beat the 49ers and are now Super Bowl bound, woo! It was a close call though and I blame it all on my choice to wear a Ross jersey instead of my good luck t-shirt. It wasn’t looking so good so I took off my jersey in the 4th quarter and boom! A big win for us. haha see? It’s all out the lucky things! I’m thinking for the Super Bowl I’ll do my nails up big. Something much more creative than just some crackle polish. But for now, this is a super easy manicure to try in your spare time. I hate the way mine look now though, so I’ll be taking this polish off between today and tomorrow and trying something else. I’m feeling creative!

I’m also working on a little self tanner post in the future. I have been experimenting with various self tanners recently and I think everyone can benefit from my trials and tribulations! So stay tuned for that!

Have you guys tried the crackle polish out yet? It was a huge trend not long ago but it seems like it’s kind of fizzled out. What are the experiences you’ve had with this wonder polish? Do tell! 😉

Drumroll Please…

Well the verdict is in…

This is our baby girl today, at 19 weeks old! She is the picture of perfection. I can’t wait to meet her. <3

Tunesday Spotlight: Pearl Jam

Happy Tunesday! I wanted to put this on the Tunesday page, but for some odd reason that page itself isn’t working at the moment. So this will just have to do. This particular tune is dedicated to the Hubbs today. This is one of his favorite songs and since today is a hugeeee day for us, I felt it appropriate. Love you babe.

This is Pearl Jam’s Amongst the Waves. Enjoy!

The Best and worst of the 2012 Golden Globes

I’m no fashion critic, and based on the conversations I’ve been having with people around the office today, my opinions are wildly varying from others. But, I must share them either way. I look forward to award shows all year round as I literally get giddy when I see everyone all dressed up to perfection. So let’s kick it off shall we? Let’s start with my personal favorite of the night… drum roll please…

Now, I basically have the world’s biggest girl crush on Kate Beckinsale. And I mean, who wouldn’t?! Look at her! She is stunning from head to toe while keeping her look simply classic. She’s not over doing it with the accessories and that is a big plus these days. Her skin doesn’t look orange, her hair isn’t too poofed, her makeup is very soft. She just looks amazing to me. She was by far my favorite look of the night.

And now for some honorable mentions: (and some not-so-honorable mentions).

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

A lot of people didn’t seem to like Salma Hayek’s look or dress, but I thought she looked incredible. She may be channeling the Terminator, but to me she looked hot. Also worth mentioning, Emma Stone, Jessica Alba, and Heidi Klum. Loved their looks!

Unfortunately, and I’m sad to say this… my worst dressed of the night goes to…….

Oh Sarah. Poor…sweet Sarah. I know her daughter picked out the dress, but her baby is like what, one, maybe two years old? Would she really even notice if you opted for something else? This look is terrible. It looks like the designer ruined her dress but at the very last minute and she didn’t have time to pick out anything else. She’s usually so classy and well dressed! I’m sad.

Madonna… we get it, you’re Madonna. You’re quircky. You have “nice arms.” We get it. Now will you please dress your age.

Another one that upset me. Jessica, what happened here? You look like you borrowed Betty White’s wedding dress from the Proposal. That’s enough, give it back now.

This look doesn’t impress me from Natalie Portman. It looks like the designer had way too much fabric left over and didn’t know what else to do with it but pin it at her side. The fit in her midsection is just all wrong for me. I don’t love this.

A big trend I noticed on the red carpet last night, aside from headbands, belts! A lot of actresses had embellished waists. Frieda Pinto also rocked a belt with her dress last night. I’m not 100% certain how I feel about this trend yet, but it doesn’t ruin any of these looks for me, so it must be ok!

So how did I do? Who were your best and worst dressed from the red carpet last night?

Winter Favorites: January

It is CHILLY out there lately. I’m not even sure if chilly is a good enough word. It’s so cold in New Jersey that my bones hurt when I’m outside for too long. And not even that long. The short walk from my car to the grocery store is enough to knock the wind out of me. Is that a good enough visual for you? It’s cold. So here are a few of my favorite things to keep me warm this winter… and a few things that in no way keep me warm but still make me happy.

1. ChapStick brand Medicated chapstick: I am a little bit of a chapstick addict. Like, no joke. On any given time I have no less than 6 different kinds of chapstick on me. However, when it’s super cold out and I feel like my lips are chapped beyond repair, I always turn to this particular chapstick. It may be all in my head, but I feel like it heals my lips within minutes.

2. A cute beanie with embellishments: I purchased this exact hat from Forever 21 and I adore it. It’s a slouchy beanie but somehow actually stays on my head, which pretty much never happens with hats like this. The bow is just an added bonus of cuteness that I love.

3. Nars Blush in Super Orgasm: I have been on an epic quest to find the perfect blush. Something not too red, not too orangey, and not too pink. Well fellow women on the same epic quest, you can stop searching. This blush is a game changer. I assume by the name, it’s supposed to make you look flushed, as if you have just finished having the most amazing…. well… you know. I adore this color. It’s pure perfection.

4. Starbucks Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate:  I am an iced coffee addict. I will forever hold a place in my heart for Dunkin Donuts iced coconut coffee. However, as the weather plummets to the teens and I have to start lessening my intake of caffeine for the baby, I find myself drinking more and more of these salted caramel hot chocolates. They’re delish and warm me right up! But extremely filling. I can never finish one!

5. Extra long wool trench coat: Matt got me one from Express for Christmas and I practically live in it this winter. It’s super warm and not over-the-top bulky like some of those puffy marshmallow coats can be. Like really… is there any way to look good in one of those? I think not.

6. Urban Decay eyeshadow in Midnight Cowboy: I love this shade! I’ve eyed it up for years and never bought it, because I had a shade that I thought was too similar. Fortunately for me, it ran out recently, so I picked up this bad boy and I love it! It’s the perfect shade to highlight a NYE smoky, shimmery eye. There’s also Midnight Cowboy Rides Again which has a little glitter mixed in and seems to be a little darker. I like it, but I’m not always a fan of the added shimmer.

7. Ugg Boots; Bailey Button Tall in Chestnut: Another Christmas present from the Hubbs this year, I live in these things. No joke. I had the same exact boots but the short version which I like to wear with jeans. These fit perfectly with my ‘i’m pregnant and can’t fit into jeans anymore’ leggings that I wear every day. They’re incredibly warm and comfy, but I mean, obviously, they’re Uggs!

8. Gloves: This is pretty much a no brainer for the winter, isn’t it? These Coach gloves have been keeping my fingers nice and toasty for years now and I will never part with them!

9. Nars nail polish in Super Orgasm: So I bought all three of these things together; blush, nail polish, and lip gloss, in super orgasm. I adore them all. This nail polish is super sheer but packed to the gills with glitter. I like layering it over a light pink polish.

So those are some of my favorite things this winter! Think I’m kidding about my chapstick addiction? Hardly. Check this picture out, I took it today. :] There’s even one missing from the picture, but I didn’t notice until it was too late. haha Also, here’s a picture of me (below) in my beanie that I featured. Unfortunately, it’s from the wrong angle and you can’t see the adorable bow, but you get the picture.

I may post again later because I am on a fashion high from last night’s Golden Globes and I don’t want to wait until tomorrow and the buzz wears off! So keep an eye out for that. Speaking of tomorrow! Matt and I are in for some pretty big news… we find out if Baby R is a boy or a girl!!!!! I couldn’t sleep last night I’m so excited and I can barely concentrate on anything today. So I’m sure I’ll be a nervous wreck for the rest of the day today. AH. Wish us luck!!! 🙂 Oh & also, Happy MLK day to everyone!

Love you all, bye!

Why getting pregnant was the best thing I ever did… for my hair.

Have you ever had one of those traumatic hair cut experiences that reduces you to tears and makes you swear you’ll never leave your house again? I have. When I was a sophomore in high school. And until this year my life has never been the same. Okay, maybe I’m being a little dramatic. Maybe it was just my hair that was never the same, but come on, when you hate your own hair for years it affects your life, right? That’s what I thought. This is me when I was younger; Beautiful, blonde, curls that seemed to go on and on. I loved my hair. I still say to this day that if I have a girl I will never cut her hair. Ever. Especially if as she gets older her hair starts to look more like mine did as I got older. The softness in my curls disappeared and I was left with a rat’s nest that only looked somewhat decent when I used about 3 quarters of a bottle of hair gel a day. This picture was taken about a week before the dreaded hair cut took place. Please note how absurdly curly my hair was… like from the root. It made straightening my hair a day-long process that even paid professionals would sometimes not care to participate in. My hair was a disaster, but as long as I kept it long, we were good. Well. Then one fine day as I was preparing for homecoming I thought, I’ll get a haircut and a blowout. The girl who did my hair first straightened it, and then cut. Anyone with curly hair knows that’s a red flag. Hair shrinks when it goes back to its natural, curly, state. And I kept begging my hair stylist to cool it with the scissors because even straight, it was approaching my shoulders. By the time she was finished, my hair, brace yourselves, was above my shoulders. The next day when I washed it and it was curly again, it didn’t even reach my chin. I was devestated. Honestly, I don’t even think that’s the right word. I cried for two straight days and wouldn’t leave my house that weekend. My mom felt so bad for me she paid for me to get my hair relaxed after school that Monday. Although it wasn’t miracle grow, it took a lot of the natural curl out of my hair and helped it reach my chin. I slowly recovered, but sadly, my hair never did. Even years later it never reached the length it was right before it was chopped. I remembered a horror story some girl told me in high school. Apparently her mom had the same kind of hair cut trauma, but it was cut so short that her hair went into shock and never grew again. I had seen her mother and her hair really never passed her shoulders. Now, I mean, I’m older and have enough sense to realize it’s because she bleached the hell out of it so often I’m pretty sure her hair just broke off every time she laid her head on a pillow, but when you’re 14 it’s a horrifying thought. So anyway, long story short. My hair, since that terrible day, had never grown back to where it was before I got it cut. I was religiously against hair cuts from that day forward hoping that not cutting would allow it to just, grow. Then, towards the end of college, I worked at a salon and they kindly explained to me hair cuts were healthy and actually helped hair grow faster. So I finally mustered up the courage to get underneath some scissors. I think it started to help but I still wasn’t satisfied. I heard about the hair, skin, and nails vitamin, biotin, and figured, why not? So I bought a bottle. I took three every day (I have no idea if that was the recommended dose or not). Now, let me tell you, my nails never looked better. They were growing faster and getting stronger, it was fabulous. Unfortunately, I didn’t think I was seeing anything in my hair, at least not the hair on my head. :\ Eventually the vitamins started giving me really bad head aches and I had to stop taking them.

So anyway. I knew prenatal vitamins did amazing things for pregnant women’s hair. Naturally I was excited to start taking them, not only to get my baby all the nutrients and vitamins they need, but for my hair too! Matt and I found out I was pregnant in early October and we went out and bought over the counter vitamins that night. After my first doctor visit in early November they put me on a prescription for this prenatal vitamin called Vitaful-1. And let me tell you, it is doing wonders for my head. My hair is not only back to where it was before, we’ll just call it that haircut, it’s better. It’s thicker, healthier, longer, and growing literally every day. I’ve put together some pictures from each month so you can see the amazing progress. Check it out.

Look at the jump between November and December. I have a jacket on in the November picture so it’s hard to tell, but my hair is just above my boobs basically. I started taking these vitamins in November and I would say my hair is growing an inch for every month. I’m loving it! I’m almost positive Doctor’s will write a prescription for prenatal vitamins even if you’re not pregnant, for the sake of the biotin they contain. The best part about this vitamin is it doesn’t make me sick! Like I said, when I was taking vitamins that only contained biotin I had a head ache every day. I’m sure over the counter prenatal vitamins will have same affect on your hair so give it a shot. It can’t hurt. :]

And now, speaking of my baby, it’s a bell pepper this week! Each week Baby Center (an amazing website for mommies-to-be) sends me an e-mail about the progress my baby is making. They always compare the baby to a food so you know how big it is that week. It’s seriously something I look forward to every Tuesday. I’m at 18 weeks this week and my baby is a bell pepper. I love it! On Tuesday we find out if we’re having a boy or a girl! Super exciting stuff!! I will be sure to keep everyone posted, of course! Now go out and get yourself some vitamins, k thanks love you bye!

Tunesday Spotlight: SR-71

So I’ve featured this band before, SR-71. This band holds an extra special place in my heart and I think I will forever be taken back to high school any time I hear any of their songs. It came on my iPod this morning as I was on my way to work and I was like yup! This is my tunesday beat. Unfortunately, they aren’t really a relevant band in the world of Youtube, so I can’t find any of their actual videos. So please listen, read some lyrics, and enjoy. :]
